DEVONSHIRE FOOD FESTIVAL 2013 – 18th November to 24th November

The Devonshire Hotels and their Restaurants will be holding their third annual Food Festival in November and they are taking bookings now for a host of events at the six establishments, owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, who welcome guests as if they were walking into their home. Devonshire Hotels & Restaurants are an intimate collection of unique places, located in tranquil and unspoiled locations in Yorkshire and Derbyshire. I stayed at The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey recently and can highly recommend this splendid country house hotel with individually designed bedrooms and two award winning restaurants – one with a Michelin star. We ate in each restaurant and were very impressed. Here is a extract from my published review of their Michelin star ‘Burlington’ restaurant:

‘’As for the quality of the food, it is without doubt 'Michelin star' quality. The head chef Adam Smith presents an exquisite prestige menu, yet he welcomed our feedback via the waiters during the evening. Each dish looked magnificent and it was clear that attention to detail was an important feature of Mr Smith's kitchen. The highlights from the ten course meal were: the Turbot on cauliflower mash with shrimps (though it did not need the pickled grapes - too acidic with such a delicate fish), the Goosnargh Duck textures and Liver Parfait and the Cumbrian Venison with Pumpkin and Coca beans. The lower lights (but still delicious in an unusual kind of way) were:- the Red Cabbage and English Wasabi with Mustard Ice Cream and the Strawberry and the Red Pepper Gazpacho with Goats Curd and Basil. All empty plates were returned to the kitchen. We have eaten in some Michelin star restaurants in the past, but the Burlington is up there with some of the best of the best!’’

This year's Food Festival consists of a series of lunches with the Devonshire’s chefs competing against some of the country’s finest, followed by Michelin star dinners.

Each lunchtime there is an informal event that includes a light hearted contest between chefs, an informative talk from one of the restaurant's favourite suppliers and a cookery demo by a Yorkshire celebrity! At £39 per person including an arrival drink, guests should arrive at 12 noon for their complimentary drink, ready to be seated at 12.30pm.

In the evenings, a selection of some of the best chefs in the country bring their menus to the Burlington for guests to enjoy. Most of these events will include a six course tasting menu, however on the Wednesday and Sunday they have some special events for guests to try. At £59 per person including an arrival drink and canapés, guests should arrive at 7pm for their complimentary drink, ready to be seated at 7.30pm

Among the guest chef's competing at this year’s Festival, alongside the Devonshire’s chefs, are:-

Mark Poynton, Head Chef at Alimentum Restaurant - Mark has worked in some enviable kitchens from Shrigley Hall, to the Michelin star Juniper restaurant in Chester and Midsummer House in Cambridge. In April 2008 Mark moved to Restaurant Alimentum also in Cambridge, gaining 3 AA rosettes and a spot in the Good Food Guide’s top 60 list.

Matthew Tomkinson, Head Chef at The Montagu Arms - Matthew’s enviable career in a local pub as part of his hospitality management degree. He went on to win the prestigious Roux scholarship in 2005 and his first Michelin star in 2008 at The Goose in Oxfordshire. Matthew moved to The Montagu Arms in 2008 and gained a star for the hotel shortly after in 2009.

Anthony Flinn, Head Chef at Anthony’s Restaurant - Anthony worked at the Michelin-starred restaurant, Lords of the Manor before moving to Barcelona to broaden his culinary knowledge, working alongside Xavier Pellicer at the Michelin-starred Abac restaurant, then moving on to the world-famous El Bullì restaurant. Returning to Yorkshire, Anthony’s Restaurant opened in March 2004 to critical acclaim, and the team have since opened another three venues.
