Falcon Hotel, Stratford Upon Avon
If you want to stay in the centre of the beautiful Stratford Upon Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, there is no finer place than the four star Falcon Hotel. Within easy walking distance of Shakespeare's home and the Harvard House (see my blog on 9th October) and a short stroll to the recently reopened Royal Shakespeare Theatre, this quintessential 16th Century bolthole features decorative half timbering and original slanted windows and totally encapsulates cosy Tudor charm, whilst harmonising with contemporary rooms and reception areas.
When I stayed there recently I had a room within the timber framed part of the hotel overlooking the street, with creaky uneven floorboards, oak furnishings, four poster bed and Elizabethan paintings. It was like stepping back in time (below). The modern wing that includes the restaurant and conference room has bedrooms furnished in a luxurious 21st century style, but if you can get one of their rooms in the original Tudor building, then go for it!
You can relax in front of real open fires during the autumn and winter or sample a traditional afternoon tea or delicious locally made Ice-cream in the beautiful courtyard garden in the spring and summer. The Legacy Falcon is a unique base for exploring everything magical about the bard including; Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Nash’s House and Shakespeare's birthplace itself, not forgetting the world famous Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre which now offers backstage tours and the opportunity to view Stratford from the new observation tower. You can then enjoy the beautiful Warwickshire countryside, along with the surrounding counties of Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, and the picturesque Cotswolds.
If you prefer, you can stay Stratford based, take a gentle stroll to the river and enjoy a tranquil trip on one of the river cruises, visit the Butterfly Farm or Creaky Cauldron attractions. To learn more about Stratford upon Avon and its history take a guided town walk or the evening Ghost Walk! For those who wish to explore a little further, the splendid Warwick Castle, Drayton Manor Theme Park and Gaydon Motor Museum are all within easy reach.
Legacy Falcon Hotel is currently offering a number of special mini breaks. Spend a night at the hotel for £99 (worth up to £240), and you'll be treated to a delicious three-course meal form the hotel's restaurant, as well as a full English breakfast the next morning. After dinner, warm up by the roaring open fire in The Merlin Lounge, or enjoy a nightcap at the Oak Bar before retiring to your inviting room. Alternatively, it is only £149 (regular price £431.80) for a two-night stay with a three-course meal on your first night and breakfast each morning or £199 (regular price £536) for a three-night stay with three course meal on your first night and breakfast each morning.
Tripadvisor awarded the hotel a certificate of excellence for 2013.
